A Basketball Filled Week in Las Vegas
NetScouts Basketball enjoyed a basketball-filled five days in Las Vegas attending the top youth tournaments along with coaches from just about every Division 1 school. We attended the adidas Super 64, the Fab 48 and the Juco Showcase.
Our first recap is of the Las Vegas Fab 48. This was an inaugural event which had strong attendance from coaches. The Drew Gooden Soldiers were crowned the winners in the presence of King LeBron James at Bishop Gorman High School on Sunday night. James stayed for most of the Soldiers' 86-66 victory over the Iowa Barnstormers to win the Invitational Division in front of 1,500 spectators.
"It was a very good event," said Drew Gooden Soldiers coach Mark Olivier. "There were some very good teams and it was a diverse field." Jabari Brown had 19 points four assists for the Soldiers, who won the Drew Gooden Extra and finished in the top eight of the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League in the spring. Brown was named the tournament MVP following the conclusion of the game. Nick Johnson and Kyle Wiltjer added 16 points each for Oakland while Seth Tuttle led Iowa with 16 points.
Led by Nick Emery's19 points, Salt Lake Metro Black won the 17 Open championship by defeating Southwest Elite Black, 68-48. Savoy Goodman had 24 points and Brandon Taylor added 20 as the Team Philly 16s beat the Oakland Soldiers 16s, 81-47, to win the 16-under Division championship.
More than 175 teams from over 20 states and Canada participated in the four-day event that ended on Sunday. Deron Williams, Drew Gooden and Kyle Lowry were a few of the NBA players who showed up to support the traveling teams that they sponsor.
We’ll list the Top 30 players at the event in a future post. Next year's tournament will be held July 22-25, 2011 at Bishop Gorman and other nearby locations.

Nike Global Challenge Day 1

It was the first day of action at the Nike Global Challenge in Hillsboro, Oregon. The first round pitted four United States teams aged 20 and under against four International Teams.
The first game matched the United States team from the Midwest against an All-Asia team. The Asian team featured four players from China, two from Taiwan, two from Australia and one from the Philippines. The game wasn't much of a contest as the Midwest team trounced All-Asia 127-86. The Americans were led by top performances by Bradley Beal, Jahii Carson and Anthony Davis. 6'4 shooting guard Beal led the scorers with 28 points on 12-for-23 shooting. Carson, an impressive 5'11 point guard, contributed 22 points on 9-for-11 shooting to go along with nine assists. Davis, a 6'9 center had 23 points and nine rebounds on 11-for-14 shooting. Bobby Parks, a 6'5 combo guard from the Philippines, impressed us with his soft touch and scored 25 points to lead the Asian team.
The second game between the USA-West against INSEP of France was much more competitive. INSEP took a one-point advantage after the first quarter and trailed by only 53-50 at halftime. France's athleticism was eident in the first half as they out-rebounded the Americans 25-18. The USA-West went out to a six-point lead after three quarters but INSEP's three-point shooting and rebounding advantage wore the American down. They tied the score at 87 before Benjamin John and frederic Bourdillon hit key three-pointers helping INSEP gain a ten-point lead midway through the final stanza. INSEP help on for an exciting 112-108 victory.
Point Guard Benjamin John led INSEP with 24 points on 5-for-7 three-pointers. His backcourt mate Ulysse Adjagba added 18 points. Alex Gavrilovic helped inside with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The USA was led by Jabari Brown's 25 points, Nick Johnson's 22 and Johnny O'Bryant's 20 points and 11 rebounds. INSEP shot 13-for-26 on three-pointers and out-rebounded the Americans by 12.
Game 3 was an absolute thriller. Canada topped the USA-East team in double-overtime 106-100. The East was up 40-36 at halftime but was outscored 31-14 in the third quarter as Canada took a 67-54 lead. The USA stormed back in the fourth quarter to tie it at 78. Both teams had several chances to win it in regulation but couldn't convert. The same thing happened at the end of the first overtime as the USA missed a shot at the buzzer after Canada missed several chances. Canada then took control early in the second overtime and outlasted the USA-East. Kyle Wiltjer and Khem Birch were huge for Canada. Wiltjer finished with 31 points and 18 rebounds while Birch had 25 points, 20 rebounds and six blocks. Kevin Pangos came on late for Canada as did Anthony Bennett. Bennett scoted 17 while Pangos had 15 with nine assists. James McAdoo led the Americans with 24 points and 13 rebounds. It was a game of "crazy" stats:
- Wiltjer took 31 shots
- Canada shot 4-31 on three-pointers. The teams combined shot 10-60 on threes.
- Canada took 111 shots to 100 for the USA.
- Canada grabbed 82 rebounds.
The final game matched the USA South against Brazil. Brazil gave the USA U18 team all they could handle in the FIBA Americas Championship last month. In this tournament Brazil is missing their top point guard Raul Neto. The USA took a 48-38 lead at halftime behind a last second three-pointer by P.J. Hairston. The USA-South extended their lead to 18 points before the Brazilians, led by their 6'9 center Lucas Riva Nogueira, cut the lead to 66-60 late in the third quarter. The Brazilians stayed close but lost their star when Nogueira fouled out with 7 minutes left. Brazil had a chance to take the lead with 15 seconds left but missed an inside shot. The got the ball back trailing 90-87 with 12 seconds left. Victor Correia then hot a long three-pointer with 1.4 seconds left to send the game to overtime tied at 90. P.J. Hairston gave the USA the lead with a three-pointer and then a nice drive to give the Americans a five-point lead. They didn't give that lead up as the USA-South held off the game Brazilians 107-99.
