NBA Summer League Day 2
Four more games were played at the NBA Summer League Las Vegas and many fans, scouts, and general spectators came away wondering how many more games we can sit through with "Referees in Training" blowing their whistles constantly. As evidence the first game of the day had Toronto and Phoenix combining for 57 fouls and 80 Free Throws...insane.
Now, to be fair, there are a lot of young guys who don't know how to play defense and struggle to keep a dribbler in front of them but seriously, 80 FT's?
GAME 1
Toronto Raptors 103
Phoenix Suns 69
- Phoenix is brutal, they've given up 100 in each game, have shot it very poorly, and other than Earl Clark have nobody who can create a shot for himself of others.
- Who put this roster together?
- Dan Majerle is lacking the thunder as Head Coach, he seems totally disinterested. In fairness, any time Michael Roll (UCLA) can come in and score 10 points in 7:51, you are hurting for players.
- Joey Dorsey had 11 boards for the Raps.
- Sonny Weems was nice, 19 points and some highlight finishes on breaks.
- Ed Davis had 15 and 8 but really needs work on the stroke.
- Taylor Griffin went 1/5 from three, had 1 rebound, 5 fouls, and 3 turnovers...was he a 1st Round Draft Pick a year ago?
- Scottie Reynolds DNP for the second game in a row.
GAME 2
Denver Nuggets 92
LA Lakers 74
-
82 year old Bill Bertka is assisting Chuck Person on the Laker Summer Coaching staff. Awesome. - This game only had 56 fouls and 59 FT's.
- Devin Ebanks (W Va.) had 24 points for the Lakers which bodes well for the long defensive minded wing man.
- Derrick Caracter, who I really liked coming out of UTEP and who impressed against Butler in the San Jose Region of the NCAA's, had 17 & 12 and looks to be in very good shape. I say he will stick in the league.
- Ty Lawson is very good (in case you didn't already know that), 18 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists, 0 turnovers, and a win...good PG line.
- Coby Karl had 12 & 7 but also had 6 fouls and 7 turnovers and a negative index rating.
GAME 3
Detroit Pistons 89
Golden State Warriors 69
- Steph Curry and Ekpe Udoh served as "assistant coaches" today.
- Brandan Wright was a good college player (not great, good) and came out too soon, got lots of money and is struggling.
- Edgar Sosa (Louisville) made some nice plays.
- The "4 Forward" alignment from the Pistons was too much for the Warriors, Austin Daye (6'11) was being checked by a 6'4 SG most of the game...he went for 20. DaJuan Summers (6'8 240) was matched by either a SF or SG and he went for 18 & 7. That leaves Jonas Jerebko (6'10) and Greg Monroe (6'11 1st Rd. pick) who combined for 22 points and 15 boards.
GAME 4
Houston Rockets 87
Dallas Mavericks 78
- The battle of Texas
- Mark Cuban is in the house
- Playing head to head most of the night, Omar Samhan (Saint Mary's) got the better of Jordan Hill (Lottery pick a year ago). Samhan had 17 and 6 along with 3 steals and shot 8/12. Hill on the other hand got some late to get to 14 & 5.
- Roddy Beaubois had 28 and is much improved from a year ago. His floor game and PG skills have really developed.
- Jermaine Taylor had 21 for the Rockets
- Moussa Seck is 7'4"...that is really tall.
- Rockets are now 2-0 in summer league and Dallas falls to 0-2.
John Wall and the Wizards play a tired Warrior bunch on Sunday...check back for more!

NBA Summer League Day 3 - Debut of John Wall
Day 3 of the NBA Summer League featured the debut of No. 1 draft pick, the Washington Wizards John Wall before a sold-out standing-room crowd. At times Wall was too fast for himself and his teammates as he turned the ball over eight times. Overall, Wall showed what he can do and once his teammates get running after him the Wizards will be greatly improved and Wall will be one of the elite point guards in the league. Wall wound up with 24 points and eight assists in Washington's 84-79 win over Golden State. Reggie Williams of the Warriors was the game's high scorer with 34 points.
We caught a nice assist by Wall to JaVale McGee. Check it out
We alsi interviewed Wizards Head Coach Flip Saunders after the game. Here's what he said about Wall.
In the other games:
- The Denver Nuggets topped the New York Knicks 100-90 as the Nuggets shot 50 free throws. That's right - 50! Ty Lawson and Coby Karl paced the Nuggets with 28 and 22 points. Lawson also had seven assists and five steals. Toney Douglas paced the Knicks with 27 points.
- Portland topped Houston in the second game 84-67. Portland had five players in double-figures and were helped by rookie Luke Babbitt's 13 points and Patty Mills' 12 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. Chase Budinger led the Rockets with 21.
- In the nightcap Miami topped New Orleans 77-72. the most impressive player of the game was second-year pro Kenny Hasbrouck from Siena. Hasbrouck scored 24 points on 10-for-15 shooting. Duke guard Jon Scheyer saw his first action ans came up with 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.

NBA Summer League Day 4 & Free Agent Moves
The past 24 hours have not been as much about the Summer League games themselves but rather the talk and rumors regarding Free Agency and moves involving high profile as well as International players.
Hedo Turkoglu (Turkey) is moving from Toronto to the Phoenix Suns in a 3-team trade that would ultimately send Boris Diaw (France) and Leandro Barbosa (Brazil) to the Raps. Josh Childress who left the NBA for more Euros in Greece with Olympiacos is rumored to be close to signing with the Suns as well.
The Miami Heat added Udonis Haslem and shooter Mike Miller to their roster. Two very good moves for a team with lots of roster space, Haslem is a defender and rebounder who is taking a serious pay cut to stay with Wade and the Heat and Miller is another former Team USA guy who can knock down open 3's with regularity. Wade, Bosh, and James will draw plenty of double teams and force rotation and Miller will make them pay.
The San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks are close to finalizing deals that I am very interested in. The Spurs have held the rights to 6'11 250 Tiago Splitter (Brazil) since 2007, he has played in Spain's ACB for Caja Laboral (formerly TAU Ceramica) and this year led them to the ACB Tournament Championship over Ricky Rubio's Regal Barcelona squad. This is a key acquisition as Splitter will be a great compliment to the Spurs veterans specifically Tim Duncan.
Timofey Mozgov, 7'1 Center for BC Khimki in Russia, is a very good addition to the Knicks. He is a lottery pick type of player that the Knicks are snagging from the EuroLeague. He has played for some of the top coaches in Europe such as David Blatt and Sergio Scariolo and is very athletic for his size. He is very well versed in Pick/Roll action and runs the floor well which should suit Mike D'Antoni and the NYK system quite well.
From Vegas...
- The Spurs beat Minnesota 85-61
- Sacramento beat the Pistons 97-68 thanks to five scorers in double figures
- Landry Fields (Stanford) led the Knicks over the Lakers with 17 points
- Derrick Caracter had another double double with 16 & 10 for LA and continues to impress scouts (both NBA and European) with his play.
- Two Bay Area guys, Jeremy Lin (Harvard via Palo Alto (pictured)) and Omar Samhan (Saint Mary's) are playing very well...not like they are going to automatically stick with a club but are doing well for themselves and will get a contract from this event if the NBA doesn't work out.
We'll update more as the day concludes, keep checking back!
