WAC Basketball Tournament Format Changed

Move to Las Vegas is not the only change.

DENVER--Western Athletic Conference Commissioner Karl Benson announced today that the league will change its postseason men's and women's basketball tournament format, effective for the 2011 tournament.

The change was recommended by both the WAC men's and women's basketball coaches and approved by the WAC Board of Directors earlier this summer.

The change will reward teams based on regular season success, giving the top two teams byes into the tournament semifinals.

Under the format:

  • the tournament will begin on Wednesday with two men's and two women's games featuring the No. 5 seed against the No. 8 seed and No. 6 versus No. 7.
  • The winners then advance to Thursday's quarterfinal matchups to play the No. 4 and No. 3 seeds.
  • The winners of those games then advance to Friday's semifinals against the top two seeds.

The change also results in two men's and two women's games being played each day of the tournament except for Saturday, which will feature the men's and women's championship games.

The 2011 WAC Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament will be held March 9-12 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas and will include the top eight teams in the regular-season standings. Ticket information will be available soon at www.wacsports.com.

Pepperdine and UCLA to Meet in NIT Basketball Tourney

PEPPERDINE MEETS UCLA IN NIT SEASON TIP-OFF FIRST ROUND

MALIBU, Calif. – The National Invitation Tournament officially announced the field for its 16-team Dick’s Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off today, and the Pepperdine men’s basketball team will head over to UCLA and face the Bruins in its first-round matchup on November 15.

The other West Region game at Pauley Pavilion features Nevada and Pacific. The winners and losers will square off one day later on November 16.

The NIT assures each school of four games. The four winners of each region will move on to New York City and Madison Square Garden for the semifinals (Nov. 24) and finals (Nov. 26), while the highest remaining seeds will host four-team consolation events on November 22-23.

In the West Region, UCLA is the #4 seed and Nevada is the #8 seed.

The North Region features #1 Villanova vs. Marist and #7 George Washington vs. Boston University, the East Region has #3 Wake Forest vs. Hampton and #5 VCU vs. Winthrop and the South Region consists of #2 Tennessee vs. Belmont and #6 Missouri State vs. Arkansas State.

"This Dick’s Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off set high standards early on and has consistently showcased the best in college basketball,” said Newton, who is a member of the College Basketball Hall of Fame. “This year's field can certainly hold its own against any of the previous 25 we've had. Half of the field is coming off 20-plus win seasons and several fell just below that mark. We look forward to a competitive tournament.”

This will be Pepperdine’s third appearance in the NIT Season Tip-Off. The Waves lost in the first round in both 1985 (the inaugural event) to Kansas and in 2000 to Indiana. Back then, teams were eliminated from the competition with one loss.

The Waves visited Pauley Pavilion last year for the first time since 2004-05, and UCLA came away with a 71-52 victory.

The 2010-11 Pepperdine squad will have its most veteran team in the past several years with 13 returning lettermen, 10 of whom are seniors or juniors. All five starters are back and the returning players account for 100% of last year’s 2,044 points scored. The Waves will look to improve upon a 7-24 record and a tie for sixth place in the West Coast Conference.

Pepperdine starts the 2010-11 season with a home exhibition against La Verne on November 5, and begins the regular season at Portland State on November 12. The Waves’ official home opener is against CSU Bakersfield on November 20.
